How to use a signal

  1. A signal meets every rule of its style right now. It is research, not a promise or a personal recommendation.
  2. Act only inside the entry zone. Never chase above it.
  3. Decide your exit first. The idea is wrong below the stop price.
  4. Size small. A trade that hits its stop should cost only a small slice of your account. How much to put in a trade

Many signals will not work. The stop keeps those losses small. Day signals are for today only. Swing: check once or twice a day. Long term: check weekly and do your own homework on the business.

What is a signal?

Each style has entry rules, written before any stock is picked. A stock shows here as a signal only while it passes every one of them:

  • Day: in play (unusual volume, up 2% or more, holding above the day's average price) and dipping toward that average, not pressing its high. When nothing is in play, a pullback toward a rising 20-day average.
  • Swing: pulled back 5% to 25% from its 3-month high and turning up on the weekly chart, or back at a recent breakout level and holding. Either way, only slightly up on the month.
  • Long term: 30% or more under its all-time high and not still falling, or making steady higher highs and bought on a dip. Business results are not checked.
  • Every style: never overbought and never stretched far above its averages.

Buy setup means our separate checklist agrees too. A signal is not a forecast and not advice for you: we do not know your money, goals or time. The rules can and do fail, which is why every signal comes with the price where the idea is wrong.

Questions about signalsCan I just buy every signal? Where are the momentum stocks?
Can I just buy every signal?
We cannot tell you what to buy. A signal only says the stock meets its style's entry rules right now, and many signals will not work. Traders who use rules like these act only inside the entry zone, decide the exit before they start, keep each trade small so a stop costs little, and pass on any signal that does not fit their own plan, time or money.
Are all long-term signals good to buy now?
Not for everyone. A long-term signal means the price setup fits the long-term rules today. It does not check the business: results, debt and valuation are not checked here. Do your own homework, think in months to years, and remember that a fund spreads the risk if you are new.
Are all swing signals good to buy?
A swing signal means the pullback and the weekly turn are there right now. Some will fail within days and reach the price where the idea is wrong. Check once or twice a day, act only inside the entry zone, and expect some trades to hit their stop.
Where are the day-trading momentum stocks?
At the top of Day: Momentum now lists the stocks in play (unusual volume for the time of day, up 2% or more and holding above the day's average price) from 7:00 AM ET before the open and through the session, each with what it is waiting for. Day trading is for experienced traders.
