Sectors today

Which sectors are hot, which are dipping, and why it matters.

Every stock belongs to a sector, and money moves between sectors as the economy changes. That movement is sector rotation. Green is up today, red is down; the deeper the color, the bigger the move. Tap a tile to open that sector.

Big drop to big gain, from the move today in each sector's funds (averaged when a sector has several). The color steps at 0.25%, 0.6%, 1.2% and 2% each way. Every small line on the site works the same way: the last 60 sessions of daily closes ("60d"), ending at today's price (the dot, green or red for today's move). The line's color is that 60-day trend; the % chip and the tile color are today's move, so a stock can be up today on a red line. A sector tile's line is its funds averaged.

How sector rotation works

A sector is a group of companies that do similar work. Banks sit in one sector. Oil drillers sit in another. Wall Street splits the US market into 11 sectors. This site uses 12 groups: it folds the two consumer sectors into one, then adds crypto and a row for the whole market.

Sector rotation is money moving out of one sector and into another. It often happens because the economy moves in cycles, and in each stage some sectors tend to do better than others. It can also happen on a big theme, like AI, or a policy change. Big investors shift toward the groups they expect to lead next, and that shift shows up in prices.

Why this matters to a beginner: a good company can still drop when its whole sector is out of favor. Knowing which groups usually lead in each stage helps you see where attention is going. But nobody rings a bell at each stage. Stocks often move before the economy does, a stage is usually clear only after it ends, and stages can last months or years and do not always come in order.

  1. 1Early recoveryThe economy is climbing out of a slump. Rates are low or falling. Hiring restarts.Tends to lead: Banks and finance, Consumer, Real estate, Industry and defense, Technology

Cheap loans and pent-up demand (spending people put off) tend to lift banks, stores (the wants side of Consumer), home builders and factories first. Small companies and technology often join in.

  2. 2ExpansionGrowth is steady. Jobs are strong. Rates rise slowly.Tends to lead: Technology, Communication, Industry and defense

Companies tend to spend on growth, and profits often rise fastest in these groups.

  3. 3Late cycleGrowth is slowing. Prices and rates are high. The Fed is tight (the central bank is keeping rates high).Tends to lead: Energy, Metals and materials, Health care, Utilities and clean energy, Consumer

High oil and metal prices tend to help energy and mining profits, and steady demand tends to make health care, staples (the needs side of Consumer) and utilities look safer.

  4. 4SlowdownThe economy stalls or shrinks. Spending and hiring fall. Rates start to drop.Tends to lead: Utilities and clean energy, Health care, Consumer

People still pay for power, medicine and groceries (the needs side of Consumer), so those profits tend to hold up better.

How to read this page
  • Green means the group is up today, red means down. A darker shade means a bigger move; the darkest shade is a move of about 2% or more. Leading means rising more than the other groups.
  • One day is noise. A headline, one big stock, or options expiry (the day option contracts end) can flip a square. Most experienced investors treat one day as noise.
  • Leading for a week is a lean (a small tilt, not a trend). Leading for several weeks while another group lags is rotation. That is the pattern this page is about.
  • Groups rarely move in true opposite directions. 'Often trades places with' means one tends to lead while the other lags. Groups that trade places on rate news, like banks and real estate, can still rise together for months when the economy is recovering.
  • Read the red squares too. Money leaving one group often shows up in another the same day.
  • Check the whole market row first. On a big down day nearly everything is red, and that says little about any one sector. Nothing moves against the whole market for long.

A hot sector does not mean every company in it is doing well, so each company still needs its own check; this page is for learning and does not tell you what to buy or sell.

Leading Banks and financebanks, insurers, payments +0.3%week +1.8%

Ahead of the market this week.

What moves it

Big banks, regional banks, card networks, insurers, brokers and asset managers.

  • Rates rising slowly: usually up (bigger lending margins, the gap between what banks pay and charge); rates jumping fast: can hurt (losses on bonds they hold)
  • Long-term rates above short-term rates: tends to help; short rates above long rates (an inverted curve) is a warning sign for banks
  • Loan defaults (loans not paid back) rising, recession fears or a bank failure: usually down
  • Busy stock trading and deal-making: often up for brokers and asset managers

Weak Utilities and clean energypower, solar, wind -1.0%week -0.2%

Slipping. Clean Energy -2.2% is dipping most.

What moves it

Electric, gas and water utilities (fund XLU), plus solar, wind and battery firms (funds ICLN or TAN). Utilities are steady and rate-sensitive. Solar and wind swing far more and often act like tech stocks.

  • Rising interest rates: usually down (their steady dividends, cash paid to shareholders, compete with bond interest)
  • Falling interest rates: usually up (their dividends look better next to bond interest)
  • Recession fears: utilities often hold up; data center power demand: often up for utilities that sell power to data centers
  • Subsidy or policy changes: big swings for clean energy, either way

Lagging Cryptobitcoin funds -2.0%week -2.7%

Behind the market this week.

What moves it

Bitcoin, Ethereum, crypto miners, exchanges like Coinbase, and companies that hold bitcoin on their books.

  • Rising rates and tight money (high rates, costly loans): usually down; falling rates and easy money (low rates, cheap loans): often up
  • Risk appetite (willingness to take chances) high and tech rallying: often up; strong US dollar: often down
  • Exchange hacks: usually down. New rules: can go either way; clearer rules have lifted prices before, crackdowns have hurt
  • Bitcoin trades all weekend, so crypto stocks often jump or drop at Monday's open
