Sectors today
Which sectors are hot, which are dipping, and why it matters.
Every stock belongs to a sector, and money moves between sectors as the economy changes. That movement is sector rotation. Green is up today, red is down; the deeper the color, the bigger the move. Tap a tile to open that sector.
big gain to big drop, from today's move in each sector's fund
How sector rotation works
A sector is a group of companies that do similar work. Banks sit in one sector. Oil drillers sit in another. Wall Street splits the US market into 11 sectors. This site uses 12 groups: it folds the two consumer sectors into one, then adds crypto and a row for the whole market.
Sector rotation is money moving out of one sector and into another. It often happens because the economy moves in cycles, and in each stage some sectors tend to do better than others. It can also happen on a big theme, like AI, or a policy change. Big investors shift toward the groups they expect to lead next, and that shift shows up in prices.
Why this matters to a beginner: a good company can still drop when its whole sector is out of favor. Knowing which groups usually lead in each stage helps you see where attention is going. But nobody rings a bell at each stage. Stocks often move before the economy does, a stage is usually clear only after it ends, and stages can last months or years and do not always come in order.
- 1Early recoveryThe economy is climbing out of a slump. Rates are low or falling. Hiring restarts.Tends to lead: Banks and finance, Consumer, Real estate, Industry and defense, Technology
Cheap loans and pent-up demand (spending people put off) tend to lift banks, stores (the wants side of Consumer), home builders and factories first. Small companies and technology often join in.
- 2ExpansionGrowth is steady. Jobs are strong. Rates rise slowly.Tends to lead: Technology, Communication, Industry and defense
Companies tend to spend on growth, and profits often rise fastest in these groups.
- 3Late cycleGrowth is slowing. Prices and rates are high. The Fed is tight (the central bank is keeping rates high).Tends to lead: Energy, Metals and materials, Health care, Utilities and clean energy, Consumer
High oil and metal prices tend to help energy and mining profits, and steady demand tends to make health care, staples (the needs side of Consumer) and utilities look safer.
- 4SlowdownThe economy stalls or shrinks. Spending and hiring fall. Rates start to drop.Tends to lead: Utilities and clean energy, Health care, Consumer
People still pay for power, medicine and groceries (the needs side of Consumer), so those profits tend to hold up better.
How to read this page
- Green means the group is up today, red means down. A darker shade means a bigger move; the darkest shade is a move of about 2% or more. Leading means rising more than the other groups.
- One day is noise. A headline, one big stock, or options expiry (the day option contracts end) can flip a square. Most experienced investors treat one day as noise.
- Leading for a week is a lean (a small tilt, not a trend). Leading for several weeks while another group lags is rotation. That is the pattern this page is about.
- Groups rarely move in true opposite directions. 'Often trades places with' means one tends to lead while the other lags. Groups that trade places on rate news, like banks and real estate, can still rise together for months when the economy is recovering.
- Read the red squares too. Money leaving one group often shows up in another the same day.
- Check the whole market row first. On a big down day nearly everything is red, and that says little about any one sector. Nothing moves against the whole market for long.
A hot sector does not mean every company in it is doing well, so each company still needs its own check; this page is for learning and does not tell you what to buy or sell.

The S&P 500 (500 big US companies), the Nasdaq 100 (big tech-heavy names) and small caps (smaller companies) together.
- Rates rising fast: usually down, and small caps often hurt most (more borrowed money)
- The Fed (the US central bank) cutting rates: often up, unless a recession is the reason
- Profits beating estimates (analyst forecasts): usually up
- The VIX (a gauge of expected market swings) jumping: usually down; when risk appetite (willingness to take chances) is high, small caps tend to lead, and when fear is high they tend to lag the S&P 500
